How to Fix the SOLIDWORKS Error: "The properties.txt file cannot be located at the specified location"
Learn how to resolve the SOLIDWORKS warning that appears when the software cannot locate the required properties.txt file.

Issue
When launching or using SOLIDWORKS, the following warning message appears:
The properties.txt file cannot be located at the specified location <EXPECTED_DIRECTORY>
The SOLIDWORKS software will use the properties.txt file located at <install_dir>\lang\english.
This message indicates that SOLIDWORKS cannot locate a custom properties.txt file in the path defined in the File Locations settings. As a fallback, it defaults to the standard file located in the SOLIDWORKS installation directory.
Root Cause
The specified file path either:
-
No longer exists,
-
Is incorrect or inaccessible,
-
Or the properties.txt file has been deleted or moved.
Resolution Steps
Follow either of the following options for resolution.
Check File Path
Ensure the folder and properties.txt file exist at the location specified in the error message.
If the file or folder is missing:
-
Restore it from a backup if available.
-
Contact your CAD administrator for a copy of the correct properties.txt file.
- If you are looking to utilize the standard file included with the installation, proceed to the next section.
Update File Location in SOLIDWORKS System Options
If the file has been moved, update SOLIDWORKS to point to the correct location:
-
Open SOLIDWORKS.
-
Go to Tools > Options.
-
Select the File Locations category from the list.
-
In the Show folders for: dropdown, choose Custom Property Files.
-
Update or remove the incorrect path and add the correct folder containing properties.txt.
- If you do not require a customized properties.txt file, add the following directory to utilize the default properties.txt file.
- C:\ProgramData\SOLIDWORKS\<SOLIDWORKS VERSION>\lang\english
- If you do not require a customized properties.txt file, add the following directory to utilize the default properties.txt file.
