How to Resolve "The source folder is not versioned properly" in SOLIDWORKS

Users may encounter the error message "The source folder is not versioned properly" when attempting to modify an installation of SOLIDWORKS. This guide provides steps to resolve this error.

 



NOTE: If the file path noted in the error message does not exist, recreate the folder structure needed to recreate that file path.

  1. Open Notepad.
  2. Type in the version of SOLIDWORKS you have installed in the format of SOLIDWORKS 20XX SP0X.
    1. e.g. SOLIDWORKS 2025 SP03
  3. Save the .TXT file as swdata99.id in the file path specified in the error message you received.

  4. Open File Explorer and navigate to the location in the error message received.
  5. Ensure File Extension visibility is turned on and remove the .txt extension from the previously saved text file, leaving it as a .id file.
    1. You will be warned that the file may be become unusable if you proceed. Select Yes.

  6. Attempt to modify your installation once again.
