How to Save and Use a Custom Bill of Materials (BOM) Template in SOLIDWORKS
A custom Bill of Materials (BOM) template in SOLIDWORKS ensures consistency across your drawings and assemblies by standardizing the structure, formatting, and column data displayed. Once saved, the template can be reused for future projects, saving time and reducing errors. This article explains how to create and save a custom BOM template.
Saving a Custom Bill of Materials (BOM) Template
- Create and customize a Bill of Materials as outlined in this introductory BOM guide.
-
Right-click anywhere inside the BOM table.
-
Select Save As.
-
In the Save As dialog box:
-
Choose a location.
-
Assign a file name that clearly identifies the template (e.g., Company_Standard_BOM).
-
Ensure the file type is set to Bill of Materials Templates (*.sldbomtbt).
-
-
Click Save.
TIP: Save this template in a shared location such as a Network Drive or OneDrive to ensure everyone has access to the same template. If you utilize the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, you can save the .sldbomtbt file to a Bookmark and sync this to your File Locations in your system options.
Using a Custom Bill of Materials (BOM) Template
Once a BOM template is saved, when you are adding a new BOM, you can select the star icon to browse for a custom BOM template file.

- Option Tools > Options (or the gear icon) and navigate to the File Locations section.
- Select BOM Templates in the Show folders for dropdown.
- Highlight the file path that is currently populated in the Folders list and select Delete.
- Select Add and browse to the location where your custom BOM template file is saved.
TIP: If you are using the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, when browsing for the folder location your BOM template is saved, select the Select from 3DEXPERIENCE button and select a Bookmark the template is found in.
