How to Troubleshoot SOLIDWORKS Design Closing Repeatedly Upon Launch

A recent Microsoft Edge update has caused SOLIDWORKS Design to not be able to authenticate properly. This will often present where SOLIDWORKS appears to launch, but then crashes after a few seconds. Please see below for information on how to resolve this.

Note: This applies only to SOLIDWORKS Design Named User Licenses (Formerly 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS), not Standalone or Network licenses. If you are experiencing issues with your Standalone or Network licenses, please contact your Value Added Reseller (VAR) or support@swyftsol.com and one of our team will be happy to help!

INTERIM STEP- Please note, this may need to be reversed once the official CEF update Install is available from Dassault Systemes: If you prefer, you can wait for the CEF fix so you do not need to revert this step at a later date.

    • Navigate to https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/webview2?form=MA13LH
    • Scroll down a little and find the "Download WebView2" Runtime section
    •  Download the 'Fixed Version' of Microsoft Edge WebView2 145.0.3800.97, and switch the architecture to x64
      • BE SURE TO HIT THE DROP DOWN AND SELECT VERSION 145.0.3800.97 and THE ARCHITECTURE THAT MATCHES YOUR PROCESSOR. You can find that in your System Information under System Type.
      • Then click Download
    • Read the Privacy statement, then Click Accept and Download

    • Create a new folder on a non-synced portion of your hard-drive, such as "C:\WebView2"
    • Copy the .CAB file from your downloads folder, then paste into the new folder you just created.
    • Right Click on the .CAB file, select 7-zip, and then select 'extract files here'

Now add a System Variable to point Edge to the working version of WebView2

    • Press Win+R or start the run command
    • Type in the following and click OK:
      • sysdm.cpl

    • In the window that pops up, click the Advanced tab, then Environment Variables

    • In the top half, click New, and fill in with exactly the codes below:
      • WEBVIEW2_BROWSER_EXECUTABLE_FOLDER
      • C:\[THE FOLDER WHERE YOU EXTRACTED THOSE FILES]
        • Please note, just include the folder, not the .exe file itself

    • Click OK three times to close all of the System Variable windows
    • IMPORTANT STEP - RESTART YOUR COMPUTER - if you do not restart, these changes will not take effect.
    • Navigate to the Platform and Launch SOLIDWORKS
