Settings Wizard Backup
This article provides step-by-step instructions to back up custom settings in SOLIDWORKS.
Settings Wizard will capture most of your UI settings such as keyboard shortcuts, menus, and custom file paths, allowing you to restore settings after a reformat or moving to a new computer. There is even a method for creating this backup even if SOLIDWORKS will not launch!

Steps to run Settings Wizard from within SOLIDWORKS -
- Start SOLIDWORKS
- Find the Options Gear at the top and click on the little down arrow and select Save/Restore Settings (or go to Tools --> Save/Restore Settings)
- On the following screen, select "Save Settings"
4. Select desired options to save, a folder location, and click "Finish" to save the file. Your settings are now saved!
Tip: Save this .sldreg file to a network location or your Cloud Storage to always have the ability to restore your settings!
Steps to run Settings Wizard from Windows Start menu (use in the event you can't access SOLIDWORKS) -
- Head to your Windows Start menu
- Type 'Wizard' and look for the Settings Wizard
- See above section to complete the backup process.
Steps to restore your Settings Wizard file from SOLIDWORKS -
- Start SOLIDWORKS
- Find the Options Gear at the top and click on the little down arrow and select Save/Restore Settings (or go to Tools --> Save/Restore Settings) and select Restore Settings
- Browse to the file location where you have your backups saved and restore the desired .sldreg file, then click
- For some settings, such as border color, you may need to restart SOLIDWORKS for this to take effect
- Your Settings Wizard restoration should now be complete!
Please note: Some settings are not backward compatible so if you are trying to restore a newer version to an earlier copy of the software, you may want to doublecheck your settings to confirm which carried over.
